Martha

I’ve been a long time Martha fan, and even sent her a homemade card when she was “doing time” hoping that it would buoy her spirits as she ate the jail’s tuna noodle casserole, or had to peel potatoes, or was missing her pets or lobster at her Maine estate. But lately, I’m getting ticked at the “tone” of the articles in her magazine. Take tonight…I settled down to read her bit about stamping/cardmaking, but then read:

“I decided to make cards for two hundred special friends this way.” Now that’s just showing off…two hundred SPECIAL friends?

-AND-

“After figuring out the number of hours the project took, and multiplying that by my hourly rate as a model when I was in my early twenties, I discovered that each card cost a lot more than if I had purchased it at Tiffany or Buccellati!"

Again, showing off.
1) Why multiply by your hourly rate as a model? Apples and oranges, I say. (Seems like a coy way of reminding us that you were a model…and we aren’t.)
2) Even if you actually performed this mental calculation, why admit it?
3) The last sentence makes it clear that shopping at Tiffany or Buccellati is indeed an option.
4) What the hell IS Buccellati?

Oooooo…I just noticed that there’s a recipe for Caramelized Rice Pudding on page 185. All is forgiven.
