On Wednseday, I heard that a friend of mine from Massachusetts died back in April. I recently sent off her birthday card, which was forwarded to her parents, and her mother wrote with the sad news. She was, apparently, undergoing chemo for a brain tumor (did not know this), but felt well enough to visit her parents in Florida. On the fifth day into the trip, the tumor caused a fatal hemorrhage. Her parents are somewhat comforted by the fact that she did not suffer. But still. She was only 51, which at one time would have seemed old...not anymore. I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this strange reality. Why do we think that our friends are protected just because we know them? And who has her beloved cats? There were two ex-husbands, and no kids. Just the cats. Things I remember about her... 1) She used to drive a hatch-back Datsun. 2) Her handwriting was so perfect that it looked like a font. 3) She loved San Francisco and Florida...anywhere warm. She struggled with the New England winters. 4) Her Christmas gift was always a neatly packaged box of tiny perfect presents...fine chocolates, tiny porcelain angels, hand-painted ornaments, a carefully selected journal. It seems impossible that this carefully addressed package will not arrive this year. 5) She had dark eyes, dark hair, and a quick temper. An emotional storm could come up in a flash. But then the storm would pass, and there would be easy laughter. 6) She bought a BetaMax before ANYONE had a VCR. I had no idea what she was talking about when she was explaining the purchase.
