shadow19's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's word is...peaches.

Fun weekend, mostly because we bought a bunch of stuff, and we NEVER buy a bunch of stuff. Everything was carefully researched. We just picked this weekend to do all of the hunting and gathering.

I bought new shoes on Friday, as I had the day off, and spent it shuffling around town with mom. I felt just like when I was a kid...picking out that oh-so-important pair of back-to-school shoes. Only this time my mother didn't press down on the toe and scrutinize my walk. I was pretty much left to my own devices. They're a pair of sturdy brown Eastlands. The type of shoes that I always gravitate towards. No Manolo Blahniks for me. No thanks. Give me a scooshy instep any day.

On Saturday, Fred bought a pair of shooting ear muffs...the kind that amplify what is being said, but then electronically shut down when a shot is fired. Quite nice. We will share them, and I guess the other person will just have to stick their fingers in their ears. Oh yeah, and he bought a gun bag that we're also sharing. (Have I mentioned that I recently bought a pistol? It's so unlike me, but not unfun. Takes a little getting used to.)

From Wal-Mart, we scooted over to Best Buy where I finally bought the digital camera and accessories that I'd been scouting out for awhile. It's a lovely little Kodak...10X optical zoom...4 MP...easy to use, etc. I'm having a ball with it. Also picked up extra memory, a camera bag, the printer dock (which will be in in a few days), an extra battery, and extra paper/ink for the printer. Cha-ching. But you don't make this kind of purchase very often, so you might as well do it right. (We looked at the camera, et. al. in Wal-Mart, but they were SO disinterested in assisting us that I said, "Never mind," and moved on. If they're like that when you're BUYING the thing, imagine how they'll be when you're complaining about a malfunction. That would be, as my mother says, like pissing in the wind.)

And now I have a scribbled out wish list from the new L.L. Bean catalog. Dare I?

But the weekend was not without its homespun charm. We made peach ice cream. Very good, though it's now quite solid, and takes a bit of chiseling to scrape together a bowl. On the plus side, it's awesomely peachy. (I'm always impressed with myself when I make a "usually commercial" product at home. The first time I made homemade pasta, I truly felt like I had just discovered fire.)

We also took our Amish scooters out for a...well, uh...a scoot. Pure foot power. I carried an actual hand-written letter in the basket of mine, and dropped it in the mailbox on our route. We got some stares, especially as we cruised downhill. Our thighs were burning on the uphills, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Peach crisp is now in the oven. I really only make it for the crunchy, buttery, cinnamony, caramelized topping.

The truth is out.
