shadow19's Diaryland Diary

The sputtering recap.

We just got back from PA yesterday, and it's nice having a weekend to decompress. The conference in Philly was fun and well-planned, and it was nice to meet a bunch of people who do what I do. The group's listserv will come in very handy for questions that are bound to crop up as I get deeper and deeper into this stockroom thing. As a whole, they were an amazingly pleasant group. We sort of bonded.

Our trip down was uneventful until we were about 13 miles from the city. One of the highway ramps that we needed to take was inexplicably pyloned off. Yikes. I had to scramble for an alternate route which is not easy when you're bound up in traffic, have no idea where you are, and have a time constraint. (It was not unlike "The Amazing Race," and I'm thinking that I might not fare well on that show. Faced with detours and crawling traffic, I tend to get ugly.) Anyway, we wormed our way to the hotel, and later found that massive mudslides in the area had caused the trouble. Stupid nature.

The evenings were full of vendor-sponsored receptions/dinners, and they were decent, though if I never see another Philly cheesesteak it'll be too soon. (I was starting to fear that they were going to be served for breakfast.) An evening at the Mummer's Museum was odd as the Mummer String Band members constantly dragged people out of the audience to perform the Mummer's Strut, which is a ridiculous looking dance. I spent the evening avoiding yet another cheesesteak and the costumed and toothless Mummer who was doing the grabbing.

We spent one night in Amish country, and stocked up on peaches, noodles, pretzels, and Wilbur Buds (not Amish, but close by). We enjoyed the slower pace and the chance to take walks without pepper spray.

It was gosh-darned cool today...strange after the 90 degree temps of a few days ago.

I'm scared to sleep. I know the Mummers are going to appear in an early morning dream. I'd bet money on it.
