shadow19's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pledge I've pledged to finish all of my half-read books before starting any new ones. It's sort of working. Sort of. I just ordered a used (but very new) copy of Why I'm Like This by Cynthia Kaplan, and have almost polished it off in a few days. It really is the book that I'd like to WRITE. I even have the photograph for the cover picked out. She makes it look easy. Must start collecting stories. Oh yeah, here's one. We missed being held-up by a box-cutter wielding robber by 10 minutes. Sunday morning we read in the paper that the Aldi's grocery store in Yorkville had been robbed at 10:30 am Saturday morning. Yipe, we said (sort of), as we had been there very close to that time. A quick check of the receipt that I'd tossed on the dresser showed our check-out time as 10:20 am. And, the newspaper said, the robber rode away on a mountain bike. Suddenly it hit us...we'd seen a guy riding in on a bike as we were driving out! If they hadn't opened up that third check-out line, we'd undoubtedly been standing there for the fracas. Might be time to pack some heat when we head out for lunch meat. (Note: Didn't intend to rhyme.) Anyway...back to the pledge...I've been pushing my way through The Prodigal Summer for more months (years?) than I care to count. I've even read The Poisonwood Bible twice in the same timeframe (once for fun; once to refresh for a bookclub meeting). What's up with that? Time to make a concerted effort to get through this puppy. Only about 100 pages to go. Lamaze reading. Push. Then it's on to the rest of a lanquishing novels. This is a disturbing habit that has cropped up as I age. Must be an attention span thing, I'm scared to admit. I just hope I don't start doing what my grandmother started doing "near the end"...apparently every time she went to the store, she bought aluminum foil and charcoal briquets. And apparently, they never used either one. Quite the stockpile resulted. Well...I think I'll settle down with a cone. Then I'll read. Happy Monday. 8:05 p.m. - 2004-06-14 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
